About this piece
Description
This brass hamsa hanging lamp is an Annapakshi thooku vilakku: a swan (hamsa) design with a five-wick lamp, made to hang from a chain. It measures 55 cm (L) × 11 cm (W) × 11 cm (D) overall and weighs 850 g.
Handcrafted in brass (pittala, hittale), it follows the Kerala and South Indian temple style of hanging lamps. The five wick holders (panchmukhi) give a ring of light, and hanging the lamp frees shelf space in a small pooja room or lights the entrance of a home mandir.
The hamsa, or Annapakshi, is the vahana of Goddess Saraswati and Lord Brahma and represents discernment and purity in Hindu tradition. Thooku vilakku are lit daily in many South Indian homes and through Diwali, Navratri and Karthigai Deepam.
